. but the election returns are still coming in. all you have to think about is this-- mitt romney got a higher percentage of the white vote in 2012 than any candidate since ronald reagan in 1984. the difference is in 1984, if mitt romney had gotten 59% of the white vote, he would have been elected president. he wouldn't have needed an african american, a la teen oh, an asian. he could have won-- that would have been an absolute majority with 86% of the whole electorate. it's down to 72. not only the loss of lateen organization but the loss of asians. the real loz for republicans over the last three elections has been their total decline and collapse of their support among asian voters, high education, higher income, and there's a sense of anti-immigrant. i think david is absolutely right in his diagnosis. i think it's very encouraging. but i think there is some political motivation here that republicans understand if they're going to be competitive in a national election, they have to make amend and make fences, especially after mitt romney ran on self-deportation as an answer to the problem i

will recall by the last election by a three-to-one margin republicans lost to hispanic voters, mitt romney lost to hispanic voters. so they understand it's in their self-interest to get something done. so you kind of see everything moving in that direction. >> and the potential stumbling block? >> of course. there are stumbling blocks. look, it depends on what that pathway leads to. does it lead to citizenship? does it lead to some kind of legal status? and how can you ensure people that the border is secure first? you know, everybody -- republicans i talk to go back to the days when ronald reagan passed immigration reform. and the problem with that everyone agrees was that the borders were not secure first. so republicans are nervous that that could happen again. and they want to make sure that doesn't occur. there's also another stumbling block in the guest worker program. how do you provide for guest workers to come into this country? that's an issue for democrats in particular. so there are stumbling blocks that would have been done years ago. but again political self-interest is at st

on the middle class. this is consistent with what the romney ryan ticket said on the campaign trail last fall. the same issue where they dodged, assembled, and ignored the perfectly reasonable question how is it possible? six months later it's back in the budget but there's still -- but there still is no answer. during the last 40 years there have been only four budgets without deficits. the last three clinton budgets and the one that george bush inherited from bill clinton. in each case taxes as a percentage of the total economy were over 20%. in this republican fantasy land budgets are balanced with revenues at 19% of the economy, yet meeting the needs of 78 million more seniors and a infrastructure deficit that is growing as america is falling apart. clearly this is not remotely possible if we are going to enjoy anything like our current quality of life. there is a real world intersection of budget saving opportunities with potential areas of agreement. health care reform is one. but not just by shifting the burden to seniors and disabled as the republicans propose in their fantasy budget.
